Tricks For Anti-Aging

by Dr. Jennifer Landa, Author of The Sex Drive Solution For Women

Your hormones are the chemical messengers that keep your body functioning well and, of course, what keeps you looking and feeling younger. From regulating metabolism and growth to controlling immune function and reproduction, hormones are major players in all that you do and all that you are – physically at least. That’s why it is important to protect your hormones and their function. The secret to aging well isn’t found in an obscure fountain of water or a magical little pill. No, it comes from inside you and is actually well within your reach.

The secret is hormone balance. And to keep those hormones balanced, you have to live a healthy lifestyle, incorporating balanced nutrition, routine physical activity, quality sleep and stress management techniques. Follow these tips to maintain balance and that youthful vibrance throughout your lifespan.

  • Balanced nutrition. Good nutrition is the cornerstone of any healthy lifestyle and it plays a significant role in the aging process and maintaining hormone balance. Drink plenty of water; include plenty of vegetables and moderate servings of fruit and lean proteins in your diet. Avoid processed foods and excess sugar, salt and saturated fats. And, don’t forget to fill in the gaps in your diet with the right supplements.
  • Routine physical activity. Your body was not designed to sit hunched over in front a computer or slumped on the couch channel surfing. You need to move – a lot! Physical activity is so important to lifelong health, anti-aging and balanced hormones.  Try to incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity each week, including both cardiovascular and resistance training.
  • Quality sleep. In 2012, study after study came to the same conclusion – poor quality sleep is as detrimental to your health as too little sleep.  Getting less than seven hours of quality shut-eye each night contributes to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, as well as intensifies cravings for junk food. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason, so make it part of your lifestyle.
  • Stress management techniques. Stress increases levels of the hormone, cortisol, which leads to a number of adverse effects inside the body. Outside, you will look and feel tired, while on the inside, your immunity is depleted and your hormones are imbalanced. Everyday stressors can build up causing damage to your body, in much the same fashion as a tragic event. Care for your mental health as well as you do your physical health – take time to relax. Relaxation can be as simple as taking ten minutes to clear your mind and enjoy the silence or slipping into a warm bubble bath. You might even try a yoga or meditation class and let your stresses be carried away as you exhale.
  • Monitor and maintain balance. Every successful venture starts with a good plan. Get your hormone levels checked. This way, you know what healthy looks like and, as you age, you can take steps to keep everything in balance. If testing reveals your hormones are out of balance, bioidentical hormone therapy can help you correct imbalances and you can work with a hormone specialist to develop a lifestyle plan that will maintain hormone balance, manage your health and sustain youthfulness.
